PlakatFest – Contemporary Polish Poster
The Polish School of Poster has always been an unusual phenomenon worldwide. In its best period each poster, regardless of the content it carried, was a fully autonomous work of art. The announcements of films, theater plays, circus performances or even the common propaganda posters were distinguished by the form of expression, graphic style, lettering, and their approach to the subject. They have always been succinct – to the point. Luckily, despite the problems and difficulties, the Polish artistic poster has survived. The glorious tradition has its continuators who maintain this genre on the high level.

Between April and May 2016 Silesian Poster Festival PlakatFest took place in Chorzów. A great number of works were submitted to the festival’s first edition, part of which will be presented in the international event Graphic Art Biennial in Szekerland. In this exhibition the works of world-famous poster artists, such as Lex Drewinski, Tomasz Bogusławski, Ryszard Kaja and Jacek Staniszewskim will be presented alongside the works of the young, very skilled budding poster artists. Poland, being famous in the poster art world can still be proud of its artists’ achievements in this field. The poster here still lives its colourful, stunning life both in the streets and in the galleries.

Graphic artists from 41 countries have submitted their artworks to the 4th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland

The seven-member international jury selected 312 artworks for the second phase of the 4th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland. According to the jury, the selected material meets the expectations and is a representative section of contemporary graphic art. The list of the selected artworks and names of artists will be made public on the official website of the event on 7 April 2016; these artworks must be submitted in original by 20 May.

The biennial is undergoing a process of maturization. 1238 artworks have been submitted altogether by 507 artists from 41 countries, which means an almost 40% growth as compared to 2014, when 314 artists from 32 countries submitted 783 artworks. The evaluation has been carried out exclusively according to professional criteria; we examined the artworks three times, first we excluded the ones not complying with the formal conditions of the call for application, then we discussed each artwork in part, and finally the jury voted in the case of each artwork – Zsolt Siklódi artist, curator of the biennial and president of the jury, explained the procedure of evaluation.

The jury evaluating the submitted artworks consists of seven members; its composition reflects the origin of the participants, as both in 2014 and this year the most artworks have arrived from Romania, Hungary and Poland. The artworks have been evaluated by Dr. István Erőss graphic artist, Head of the Department of Visual Arts of the Eszterházy Károly College from Eger, dr. Kaja Renkas graphic artist, staff member of the Art Institute of the University of Silesia in Katowice, Zsolt Siklódi artist, the curator of the biennial, dr. Béla Szepessy graphic artist, Head of the Institute of Visual Culture of the University of Nyíregyháza, József Szurcsik painter, Vice Rector for Education of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Ovidiu Tarța graphic artist, staff member of the University of Art and Design from Cluj-Napoca, as well as Zoltán Vécsi Nagy art historian, director of the Transylvanian Art Center.

The submitted material is much better as compared to previous editions – Zoltán Vécsi Nagy art historian appreciated the artworks. For me, the biennial means the meeting of various cultural and aesthetic concepts, and this year this manifests in the diversity of the material. The artworks arriving from Asia are different from the ones coming from Europe. There are pronounced Bulgarian, Polish, Hungarian and Romanian profiles; within the latter, the characteristic features of distinct graphic art schools can be recognized in the submitted artworks – Vécsi added.

As regards the submitted artworks, the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland is of international standards, resembling the International Print Triennial in Krakow in several respects – Dr. Kaja Renkas graphic artist, the Polish member of the jury, emphasized.

According to Dr. István Erőss graphic artist, it is an art historical momentum that the call for applications did not allow the distinction between the techniques of creation of the artworks, thus they could be evaluated based on the artistic content and not according to techniques. “We are the witnesses of the canonization of digital technique, 20–25 years ago it was not possible to participate with digitally created artworks anywhere, later they figured in separate categories, and now they have become equal with artworks created with traditional techniques” – he added.

Organizers of the 4th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland: the Covasna County Council, the Harghita County Council, the Cultural Center of Covasna County and the Lăzarea Cultural and Creation Center.

The Call for Application of the 4th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland has been made public

On 1 February, on a press conference, the Covasna and Harghita County Councils presented the call for application of the 4th edition of the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland, one of the prestigious fine arts events of the Carpathian Basin. The competition welcomes the participation of artists from both Romania and abroad. Beginning with this year artworks can be submitted in one category; the deadline of uploading the digital reproductions is 25 March.

Sándor Tamás, president of the Covasna County Council, quoted the thoughts of Botond Részegh, artist from Miercurea Ciuc, in connection with the 4th Graphic Art Biennial, according to which the value of a town is determined by its cultural life. The county leader said: “This is true also in the case of Szeklerland; the value of this region is mainly defined and determined by its cultural value. This is the reason why eight years ago, when we planned the future with a few politicians from Szeklerland, we assigned an important role to culture. It is my conviction that a community with a cultural background is the one which can develop; besides infrastructure and education, culture must especially be supported. This event is one of the most important events that reinforce identity in Szeklerland. The total sum of the event taking place under the patronage of Hunor Kelemen, former Minister of Culture of Romania, is 92,000 RON, which is the equivalent of the construction costs of 230 m county road.”

According to Csaba Borboly, president of the Harghita County Council, it is good to see that the Graphic Art Biennial is gaining force, the participation of inland and international artists indicates a continuous dynamics. “This event is a good example of cooperation in Szeklerland, the result of joint efforts. Scandals and conflicts have never brought success for Szeklerland, only positive events have. I can say in connection with this event that this is the way it is worth working for Szeklerland, this is how we can make our region more beautiful and more attractive, and this can have an impact on the youth’s intent of remaining in their homeland or their returning home. This is why this cultural competition also has a political purport, and this is why I believe in such events” – the president of the Harghita County Council said.

The Consulate General of Hungary in Miercurea Ciuc has offered a special prize, which will be awarded based on the evaluation of the professional jury. Barna Pál Zsigmond consul general expressed his view that he considers it important that the Biennial, as a prestigious event based on modernity, strengthens the international reputation of Szeklerland. The material of the exhibition presented in Sfântu Gheorghe will also be exhibited in Miercurea Ciuc, jointly organized by the Harghita County Council and the Consulate General of Hungary in Miercurea Ciuc.

From the outset the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland has assumed the task of formulating the integrating role of graphics. Zsolt Siklódi, the curator of the Biennial drew attention to the new aspects of this year’s edition: “After extensive discussions with the jury we decided that it was time to redefine the categories of the classical and experimental techniques markedly distinct in the 1990s, since by now these means have come to exist in permanent interaction.” The call for application does not make a distinction between artworks created with traditional and modern multiplication techniques applied in graphics; the only condition of participation is that the artworks have been created in the past two years. It is also a novelty as compared to the previous editions that the artworks can be directly uploaded on the website of the event:  www.grafikaiszemle.ro.

The 4th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland sets itself the aim of presenting a valid and thought-provoking visual universe for the public living their daily lives overcrowded by visual content. At the same time, the Biennial is a means of seeking ways in generic terms, since it searches for the place of graphic artworks created with various techniques  in the international trends by juxtaposing the local and the universal.

“The artists can submit maximum three artworks in electronic format by the deadline, 25 March.  Only individual artists – professional artists and fine arts university students – can submit their artworks”István Imreh-Marton, director of the Cultural Center of Covasna County, made known the conditions of participation and submission requirements. The evaluation of the artworks will be carried out by internationally acknowledged art historians, university professors and graphic artists in two phases. After the preselection the artworks selected by the jury must be submitted in original. From this material the exhibition of the 4th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland, the opening event of Szeklerland Days, will be organized, hosted by the Transylvanian Art Center in October 2016. The awarded artworks will be selected from those remaining in competition after the preselection. Besides the 2000 Euro main prize, the international jury will award three prizes of 1000 Euro each. The detailed call for application is available on the official website of the event.

In the month preceding the announcement of results the organizers of the event plan several fine arts events. Traditionally, there will open an individual exhibition of Erika Szőke graphic artist, who won the main prize of the 3rd Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland; this year the public will also have the opportunity of getting acquainted with the world of contemporary Polish posters. In the spirit of the Biennial, the event will provide a possibility to reinterpret Polish poster art, now regarded as being classic.

The Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland was initiated in 2010 by the Lăzarea Cultural and Creation Center and the Cultural Center of Covasna County. The previous three editions have achieved considerable results; more than 900 artworks were submitted from 41 countries altogether. The international recognition of the event is growing year by year, which also manifests in the number and diverse nationality of the participants.

Call For Application, 2016

The 4th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland
Sfântu Gheorghe, 2016

The integrative character of contemporary graphics

The Covasna and Harghita County Councils and the Cultural Center of Covasna County are organizing together the 4th Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland between January 20 and December 20, 2016.

General information:

Directing our thinking, perception and habits imperceptibly but very effectively, the created visual sign system covers our world almost entirely. We live in a world dominated by images, fact which must indispensably be taken into account. Especially by artists thinking and carrying out their activity in the field of fine arts.

Graphics also reflects this determining character of images and the changes of their social role; in its case the specific transformations of genres mutually influencing one another can be perceived perhaps the most powerfully. Virtual images have changed the role of graphics; nevertheless, the printed picture connected to the materiality of the artwork has not lost its importance either. In the world of the pictorial turn graphics has also become borderless; today the artist can freely choose the carrier of the images generated by new media. By printing, the virtual image can return to traditional reality bound to materiality, thus the digital image also becomes a means of graphics.

The objective of the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland is to place side by side the local and the universal, and thus to find and define the role of endeavours in the field of graphics, born in the region as well as in other parts of the world, within global trends, in terms of both traditional and digital graphics. It aims to achieve this by fully respecting the freedom of the artists unbiased by stereotypes, as regards the choice of the means, the technique and the carrier of the visual mode of expression.

In accordance with the above, we can define several characteristics and forms of interpretation of the notion of graphics: its multiplicative character, printing as a communication medium, graphics as a visual mode of expression, graphic image creation as a form of illustration, digital image creation, the mode of visual archiving and the printed versions of these, the visual printed document. Every participant can choose from the enumerated definitions, they can provide definitions and visual responses. The Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland offers possibilities of choice and expects visual responses to the respective definitions.

Contrary to the first three editions of the biennial, this year we have modified the definitions of the application categories. We hereby announce one comprehensive category, which tries to integrate the possibilities of contemporary graphics. In accordance with this, the present call for applications announces one category, namely Printed graphics, which includes the following proposed procedures and methods of graphic art:
1. graphic artworks created with traditional procedures of graphic art;
2. graphic artworks created with digital methods of image creation and printed with digital devices;
3. graphic artworks prepared with digital methods of image creation but printed with traditional methods.

The Exhibition Was Opened, the Prizes Were Awarded

The exhibition of the Graphics Review, 3rd Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland was opened at the Transylvanian Art Center in Sfântu Gheorghe, on the Day of Hungarian Culture, 22 January, 2015. On this occasion the ceremony of awarding the best artworks was held.

The opening ceremony of the biennial started at the Transylvanian Art Center, where Zoltán Vécsi Nagy, director of the institute, and Zsolt Siklodi, curator of the biennial, greeted those present and spoke highly of the exhibition.

Zsolt Siklodi presented the history of the Graphics Review, mentioning that it is an international fine arts event supported by the councils of the counties of Szeklerland, namely Harghita, Covasna and Mureș, and it was first organized in 2010, then in 2012. The aim of the organizers was to define the place of graphic endeavors of our narrower and wider region, Szeklerland and the Carpathian Basin, within global trends, besides, to bring and make known, through the event, fine arts views born in other parts of the world. According to Zsolt Siklodi, the fact that the biennial has indeed become an international event, is also confirmed by the fact that 336 artists submitted their applications with 783 artworks, from 32 countries. He added that the international jury consisting of graphic artists and professors of universities of art selected 228 artworks for the review, which are exhibited for the first time at the Transylvanian Art Center and at the Szekler National Museum. The former hosts the artworks belonging to the category of experimental graphics as well as the awarded works of this year’s biennial and the latter offers space for the artworks created with the technique of traditional graphics.

The curator evaluated the event with the following words: “Based on these data we can rightly say that the Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland has become the greatest fine arts competition and event of this kind in the country. Thus the graphics review moves in the right direction, having earned itself the rank of obliging the applying artist to high quality.”

In his opening speech Zoltán Vécsi Nagy expressed his conviction that the 3rd Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland, by now growing into its maturity, has a beneficial effect upon the fine arts of our region, Szeklerland, but in a wider context also of the whole nation and country, of the entire region of the Carpathian Basin. He considered it especially fortunate that owing to the social capital arising from the openness of organization characterizing the biennial, the event has acquired an international character, as a consequence of which artworks of excellent graphic artists have entered the review. He also added: “I consider it a great thing that not only graphic artists of the wider region, but also the local ones, from Transylvania, from Szeklerland, hold their ground worthily in this high standard international field.”

The opening of the exhibition was followed by the awarding ceremony, on which the Háromszék Prize for Culture and the prizes for the best artworks of the biennial were awarded. Two special prizes, three prizes of 1,000 euro offered by the organizing counties from Szeklerland and a main prize of 2,000 euro provided by the Ministry of Culture were awarded. The Zereda Art Camp Prize was awarded to Gabriella Lakatos, artist from Odorhei, Romania; the Pulzus Art Camp Prize was awarded to Norbert Filep graphic artist, Romania; the Nagy Imre Prize offered by the Harghita County Council was awarded to Magda Szplit, graphic artist from Poland as well as to Teodor Asenov, graphic artist from Bulgaria; the Nagy Pál Prize offered by the Sóvidék Microregional Association was taken over by Diar Nurbintoro, ambassador of Indonesia on behalf of Reno Megy Setiawan, Indonesian artist; the Plugor Sándor Prize offered by the Covasna County Council was awarded by Sándor Tamás, president of Covasna County Council, to Gergely Kárpáti, artist from Hungary; and finally, the Main Prize of the Biennial was awarded by Csilla Hegedűs, the Deputy Secretary General for Culture of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, to Erika Szőke, graphic artist from Slovakia. The awarding ceremony was made more colorful by the contribution of the jazz band Impro-Víziók 2.2.

The organizers would like to thank all participating artists for their contribution to the standard and success of the event.

The Graphics Review, with already three editions so far, was organized by the Covasna County Council and the Cultural Center of Covasna County, in close collaboration with the Harghita County Council, the Transylvanian Art Center and the Lăzarea Cultural and Creation Center.
